Boers-Li Gallery represents successive generations of internationally operating Chinese artists and seeks to open dialogues between the different stages of Chinese contemporary art: the “underground” period of No Name Group and Star Group from the 1970s, the Beijing Abstract Movement from the early 1980s, the ’85 New Wave Movement, the New Media Movement in the 1990s, as well as the younger generations: the so-called “Millennials” and “Post-Internet".
André Butzer Solo Exhibition
02.03.19 - 14.04.19
Boers-Li Gallery is delighted to present André Butzer's first solo exhibition in Beijing, marking the gallery’s continuous collaboration with German artists since the “5 X Berlin” exhibition in 2018. The works on view will include the artist’s most recent acrylic paintings and pencil drawings from 2018. Opening to the public on March 2, 2019, the exhibition will take part in the programs and events during the Beijing Gallery Week.
A highly respected artist in the contemporary art scene, André Butzer develops his works exclusively around the medium of painting and its history. Since the mid-1990s, his colorful paintings have been gaining international recognition, in representing a variety of cartoon-like characters. Known explicitly an expressionist painter, the depth and breadth Butzer’s oeuvre however reveal a tremendous amount of evolution in practically all aspects of his craft: style, medium, composition and subject matter. His act of painting is inextricably linked to the experience of life and death itself, so much so that one becomes a self-reflection of the other in a seemingly endless cyclical paradigm.
André Butzer, born in 1973 in Stuttgart, Germany, and graduated from Hamburg’s Akademie Isotrop in 2000, is currently living and working in Los Angeles.
