“A magician is someone who performs magic on the stage. We used the term 'Magician Space' because we feel as if we’re giving a stage to the artist, who functions like a magician,” says Qu Kejie @, Founder of Magician Space @. Since its establishment from 12 years ago, almost 80 to 90 percent of past exhibitions at Magician Space have been trying to minimise the role of the curator, and protrude the artist’s project itself. “Knowing how to make the thoughts, the actions, and the artworks of each artist stand out” is a significant task for the gallery.

“I believe, really good artists, they have sort of a universal message or universal value,” says René Meile, Partner of Galerie Urs Meile @galerieursmeile_beijinglucerne in Beijing. Since its 2005 opening in Caochangdi, Galerie Urs Meile has not only worked with the established artists from China and Europe, but has also been dedicated in supporting new talents and emerging artists. René believes that among the artists they work with, that “universal significance” always exist, and their job is “to make people understand why or what they actually do”.

“To some extent, those young artists and our gallery are alike, on account of both standing in our primary stages”, says Hao Ting, Co-founder of Fingerprint Gallery @fingerprintgallery. Going through the primary stage arises the empathy of the young gallery to those young artists, and therefore, a better understanding on what they intend to express. “We would like to give the opportunity to them to decide the form of creation and exhibition, and encourage more free expressions” - Ms Hao always expects the present exhibition can outdo the previous one.

“So we decided to name our gallery ‘Platform China’ as we expect to offer a platform for Chinese art that can get involved into (the larger picture of) the artistic creation and, further, contemporary culture,” says Chen Haitao, Founder and Director of Platform China Contemporary Art Institute @platform_china . Confronting the general lack of exhibition spaces and international platforms for artistic dialogue at that time, Mr. Chen started his gallery in 2005.
